First-purchase welcome email automation

A first-purchase welcome series starts when a new customer pays for the first time. It tags them in Mailchimp by what they bought, sends a short sequence that fits that purchase and stops as soon as they order again.

An example of how the studio would build it. No live services are connected.

Turn a first purchase into a proper welcome.

  1. Step 01

    First order placed

A paid Shopify order or a successful Stripe payment arrives with the customer’s email and what they bought.

  2. Step 02

    New customer confirmed

Check order history and Mailchimp so only genuine first-time customers start the series.

  3. Step 03

    Customer tagged

Add or update the Mailchimp contact, tagged by product or category, with their marketing consent recorded.

  4. Step 04

    Series started

Send the matching welcome emails over the following weeks: a thank-you, tips for what they bought and a relevant next step.

  5. Step 05

    Series stopped

A second order, a refund or an unsubscribe ends the series at once and moves them to your usual emails.

The result

A first purchase becomes a relationship.

Promotional emails go only to customers who have agreed to hear from you. A second order, refund or unsubscribe stops the series straight away.

Before we connect it.

Where this is useful

Useful when a first-time customer receives a receipt and then nothing until the next newsletter. A sensible first version sends one short sequence to every new customer, then adds branches for different products once the basics work.

What we need to connect

  1. 01Paid order or payment events from Shopify or Stripe, with a stable customer email and order ID.
  2. 02Mailchimp audience fields for marketing consent, product tags and whether the series is running.
  3. 03Approved emails for each branch, the gaps between them and the events that should end the series.

What needs careful handling

Webhooks can arrive more than once, and the same sale can appear in two systems. Choose one source of truth for orders, use the order ID so each series starts only once, and recheck for a newer order before every send. A refund, cancellation or unsubscribe should end the series immediately rather than wait for the next scheduled email.

Questions people ask.

Do I need both Shopify and Stripe?

No. Use whichever system records your sales: Shopify for shop orders, or Stripe for services, subscriptions and invoices paid online. If both see the same sale, one is chosen as the source so the welcome starts once.

Can Mailchimp send the sequence on its own?

Often, yes. Mailchimp’s own automations can send the emails, and the connection supplies the tags, consent and purchase signals they rely on. Which automation features you can use depends on your Mailchimp plan.
